Chapter 19: Oromo History (Part 1)

Seenaa Oromoo (Kutaa 1)

The Oromo People

According to the elders, the Oromo are the beloved of Waaqa (God). Waaqa loves the Oromo people because they used to spend their time praising Him. The Oromo were devoted to Waaqa. Seeing their righteousness, Waaqa blessed them saying: "Oromo, wherever you step and whatever you have shall be yours, go, prosper, and multiply."

The Oromo had two sons: Barentuu and Boorana. They too had many children. It is said that the Oromo nation originated from these two brothers. Over a long period, the Oromo settled in a wide and fertile land, prospered, and multiplied. Thus, the will of Waaqa was fulfilled.

One day, Oromo called his sons and said, "There are three things you must strengthen and pass on to future generations: the Oromo's Waaqa, the Oromo's Land, and the Oromo's Language (Afaan Oromoo)."

Oromo Divisions

The Oromo nation is divided into many regional groups. Among them are: Raaya, Azaboo, Walloo, Afran Qalloo, Ituu, Anniya, Arsi, Maccha, Tuulama, Gujii, Gurraa, Gaarii, Boorana, Gabraa, Orma, Waata, and many others.
